The facade design featuring perforated aluminum composite panels creates a lightweight aesthetic imbued with dreamy haziness.

Perforated panels are indispensable components in the construction industry. They can be seen everywhere, and the most common application lies in exterior wall decoration. Metal perforated panels used in architecture are generally based on aluminum sheets, with different hole patterns highlighting distinct features. Perforated aluminum composite panels boast light weight, excellent rigidity, high strength, rational structure and long service life. Under different light conditions, environments and viewing angles, they deliver diverse visual effects. Applied in various scenarios, they exude an elegant temperament and distinctive character. Thus, perforated panels have rapidly stood out among numerous materials in the application of building skin decoration.

Ngoolark Student Services Building
The Ngoolark Student Services Building at Edith Cowan University, adorned with golden "feathers" and a striking architectural form, adds an innovative and ingenious gateway to the modern university campus. The building draws inspiration from the layered, curved plumage of the Carnaby’s black cockatoo, which also inspired its name.

According to the architects, the golden perforated aluminum mesh cladding the top three floors of the building is modeled after the subtle iridescence of butterfly wings. The panel design resembles an extended skin, its random folds and configurations seemingly nestling gently around the building. The structure then extends eastward and curls upward, forming a floating sculptural roof over the upper-level terrace café area.

While the mesh design takes cues from butterfly wings, the perforated pattern is inspired by the closely arranged curved feathers of the Carnaby’s black cockatoo—symbolizing both the solidity and void of the golden mesh. This design creates a rich luster outdoors, paired with delicate shadows and silhouettes cast indoors as sunlight, colors and countless patterns of varying shades are refracted through the panels.

The facade of the Ngoolark Building uses desert gold and bronze aluminum composite materials. The inventive perforated aluminum panel design shimmers in the sun like the plumage of the white-tailed black cockatoo, and glows like the cross-section of a gold mine. In addition to cladding the building’s exterior walls, these composite materials are also applied to the streamlined footbridge, where winding white lines—like ripples in water—guide pedestrians from the Forum to the Lecture Hall.

The Ngoolark Building boasts a rich palette of colors as a whole. Its vibrant color scheme is jointly defined by the sleek concrete terraces, the sun-shading golden perforated aluminum facade, and the folded patterns mimicking the plumage of Carnaby’s cockatoo. The golden perforated aluminum mesh cladding lends the building a highly sculptural form while also endowing it with a delightful sense of translucency.

Simmel Shopping Mall

The new building’s pursuit of functional flexibility and business format diversity is equally reflected in the design of its facade. The outer layer of the building will adopt a lightweight and translucent envelope system, endowing the structure with a bright, dynamic and uniquely charming visual effect, just like a colorful and gorgeous robe. The colors of the facade transition gradually in a fixed sequence, turning the entire building into a three-dimensional carrier that embraces the intriguing interplay of light, shadow and colors in the eyes of viewers.

The facade of this shopping mall features an externally installed ventilated curtain wall with an ingenious design. Two custom-colored aluminum composite materials are selected for the curtain wall: one is "Cherry Blossom Pink", whose hue shifts from bright red to emerald green depending on the time of day, weather conditions and viewing angles, with the visual inspiration drawn from Japanese cherry trees; the other is "Galaxy Blue", transitioning from a deep steel blue to a clear sky blue.

Both finishes boast a glossiness of no less than 80%. From different angles, the curtain wall presents distinct visual effects, bringing fresh surprises to visitors. The perforated decorative band encircling the building is truly the icing on the cake—its perforated design allows light and shadow to interweave here, endowing the curtain wall with rich and varied color gradations and visual textures. Whether passing by train or car, one will be greeted by a dazzling and captivating scene.
