Villa Wolf, 1926


Completed in 1926, this villa is situated on the banks of the Neisse River. Commissioned by Erich Wolf, it granted Ludwig Mies van der Rohe complete creative freedom in the design process. It marked the first time Mies abandoned sloped roofs and opted for more fluid interior spaces, achieved by creating open, transparent spatial volumes and connecting them via porches.


The three-story villa features a rectilinear design. It incorporates several spaces that open up to the outdoors, such as terraces at various levels, including a small orchard situated on the balcony of the second floor. The primary building material employed for this project is brick.

Barcelona Chair


The pavilion featured sparse furniture and decor, free from the constraints of daily activities. This dramatic spatial design of the pavilion fully embodied Mies’ famous maxim: “Less is more.” Hailed as “the most elegant chair of the 20th century”, the Barcelona Chair draws its design inspiration from the Curule Chair, a folding seat used by nobles in ancient Rome. Its stainless steel frame boasts graceful arcs, with every component crafted entirely by hand—exuding an air of nobility and solemnity. Chicago Federal Center by Mies van der Rohe


Completed in 1974, the Chicago Federal Center actually consists of three buildings arranged around Chicago Federal Plaza. The entire complex perfectly embodies two recurring themes in Mies’ career: two high-rise towers that further develop the concepts previously explored in the Seagram Building, and a vast open space in front of the post office.

In 1974, with the unveiling of Alexander Calder’s Flamingo sculpture at Federal Plaza, its sinuous, scarlet form created a striking contrast with Mies’ understated linear architecture. Mies’ impeccable mastery of proportion and detail endowed the entire complex and the plaza’s exterior space with a timeless urban presence.
