As a key air hub linking China with ASEAN countries, Nanning Wuxu International Airport carries a dual mission: facilitating regional cultural exchanges and supporting modern transportation networks. The airport’s history dates back to November 1962, when it was officially completed and relocated from the original Nanning Airport (established in 1958). Since then, it has undergone several major expansion phases to meet growing demand:
- The first phase of expansion was finished in 1990.
- The second phase was completed on September 25, 2014.
- In 2019, work began on the renovation and expansion of the Terminal 1 (T1) area, as well as the runway expansion for the Terminal 2 (T2) area.
- On March 19, 2020, the construction of a second runway and Terminal 3 (T3) was officially approved.
Alternative Solutions
Against this backdrop of growth and regional significance, the airport’s ceiling project was developed to play a vital role: creating a memorable waiting space that embodies local cultural characteristics.
Nanning is a city rich in ethnic traditions, and this heritage is thoughtfully woven into the ceiling design—specifically drawing on cultural elements of the Zhuang and other ethnic minorities. From the iconic bronze drum patterns of the Zhuang people to the intricate textures of Zhuang brocade, these cultural symbols were carefully abstracted and refined, then presented in a sleek, modern design style. The design also aligns with the airport’s contemporary aesthetic: clean, flowing lines are used to divide and unify the space, resulting in an open, rhythmic visual effect that feels both spacious and dynamic.
Crafting a suspended ceiling of this complexity—especially one featuring aluminum baffle panels and custom aluminum components—places exceptional demands on a company’s craftsmanship and technical skills.
